The Breakdown (Day One)

March 20, 2006

Well we made it there and back again.

We had a great trip there with no real hiccups (except Craig almost yacking all over my back-seat). We made it to our hotel and met up with Paul and his girlfriend Karrell for some dinner at the Keg. I was pretty disappointed in the steak I had as they served it good and bloody the first time (I asked for well-done) and then they brought it back charred and rubbery. I ate it, but no discount or anything…for a steak house, I’d say that’s piss poor.

Anyhow, it’s probably easiest if I break it down on a day-by-day and night-by-night basis (Amy’s idea! :) )…so here we go (each day and night will be a daily post):

Saturday March 4th:

Our flight was good as we had a super hot flight attendant but we’re all chicken so non of us said a word really (SURPRISE). The highlight of the flight was playing poker at 30 000 feet!

We arrived at our resort just in time for the 8:30 seating of dinner at the buffet restaurant (which was awesome compared to the theme restaurants). Had a good dinner and of course had some fruit for dessert. I mention the fruit because as expected it was amazing…well at least the cantaloupe was, the watermelon was hit and miss. Once we unpacked and settled in we figured we should go check out the casino! Mike and I decided to play poker and cut a deal where we would split the winnings and avoid playing against each other. Sure enough, I got shit cards and was pretty much “blinded out” (sorry non-poker players). Mike on the other hand (pardon the PUN) won BIG…$1200 US big! Which was nice. So we split that and had our excursions paid for for the rest of the vacation (thanks Mike)! Craig played some blackjack but was unlucky there. But I shared some of the wealth Mike brought us so we all left happy.

Not too exciting, but there you have it…our first night there. Tune in tomorrow to see what happens to our Super Heroes as they venture into the Dominican and see what they discover.

Cheers!
Andrew

The Spoils

Monday…

January 9, 2006

Hello my peeps…

Well it’s Monday (YES!) and I am so happy to be awake right now (11:18am). OK OK, so I’d rather be in bed sleeping…so sue me!

I’m not sure what to blog about today so I’m going to go with a pretty “broken” blog if you will and discuss a few things that have made their way through my head this morning…

First off, the election is just around the corner (2 weeks or so) and I (along with Matt) are feeling a bit ill to hear that the Conservatives (Steven Harper – Bush luvin’ bastard) are in the lead. Anyhow, this drives me nuts because the only reason people are (as far as I can tell) even considering voting for the Conservatives is because the Liberals were caught with their hand in the cookie jar! Perhaps there are a select few who actually agree with the points the Conservatives are pushing but in reality a large part of their campaign is riding the fact that liberals gave away a few million bucks. Alright, I don’t agree with the fact that the Liberals were stealing from us, and I think they should be punished (and I believe they are being punished right now by having the polls “scare” them), but I don’t agree with letting the Conservatives take power because – and let’s be honest here – whoever is in there is going to steal! As much as I hate it, it’s true! And with that being said, at least the Liberals were giving it to Canadian companies (as far as I know)…BUT, if Harper gets in there he’ll sell the whole country to the Americans! If Harper was in there during the Iraq fiasco our troops would have been over there and our economy would be doing about as well as our neighbour’s to the South. Bottom line is they all steal, so why go with that blue eyed FREAK SHOW and risk having him sell us to his good buddy Bush rather then let the economy continue to be the best it’s been in years and allow health care to continue receiving funding…my two cents…discuss!

Next on my mind is the weekend…I had my mortgage meeting. The meeting went well, found out what my borrowing power is as well as some good tips about renting. I also dog sat, which, was an adventure! :) Ummm, oh and then there was the fact that my brother has ALL the luck in our family (trade off I guess, I got the looks and the brians – OHHHH, can’t wait to see what you guys say to that). I say that because he won all $460 that was in the pot this weekend for poker! That bastard…he couldn’t lose!

And finally, I read an article detailing how some archaeologists in Guatemala discovered the earliest Mayan writing beneath some pyramid! They dated the sucker using carbon dating (like Lavalife I think – just a little different) and the writing was 2300 years old! DAMN that’s old…apparently they are having trouble deciphering it (YA THINK!?) but they think there is a word representing “ruler” in there some where. My guess is some guy was bored and wrote “Jo Mamma was here” or “For a good time call Chaaktemal” or something like that.

Cheers!

Happy New Year

January 3, 2006

Happy New Year everyone, here’s hoping 2006 is good to us all.

I’m not a huge believer in resolutions, but this year I’ve decided to try the whole “resolution” thing out anyways and see how it treats me.

My resolutions are as follows:

1. Only play in one “serious” game of poker a month (leaving the door open to as many $5 and $10 games I can get my hands on!)

2. Only go down to the bars once a month

3. Spend less by going out less for dinner etc.

4. My first investment contribution (for my house) has come out of the bank, my goal now is to live off what I have left from my monthly pay without having to interrupt my monthly investment schedule.

So there you have it, my New Year’s Resolutions.  Comments with your resolutions (if you have any) are appreciated – comments by Randall mocking my resolutions are expected!

Cheers!

The Chronicles Of The Weekend: “The All-Nighter, The Cards and The Bad Beats”

December 12, 2005

WOW…I sure got the most out of this weekend.  Cards, cards and more cards with a movie and some booze…it was good times!

Friday night was a small fun poker game at Matt’s where I lost both games and both were on what we poker addicts like to refer to as “Bad Beats”.  But it was fun…got home around 2am and hit the hay.

Saturday was also nice as it was my dad’s birthday.  The grandparents were over for dinner along with my brother and the rest of our family.  After dinner and the festivities were over my brother and I decided to play a little heads-up poker.  Sure enough, I call Craig and just like that there is three of us playing poker (started at about 7 or 8pm)…Well 5 in the morning rolls around, we’re drunk and finally decide to call it a night while making the decision to go to see The Chronicles of Narnia sometime the next day.

I’m a nice guy so I make the boys some breakfast and we head to the 1:15 show…let me say this…THAT MOVIE SUCKED!  I’m sorry, I had high expectations and the whole time I was watching that POS I was begging for one of two things to happen: A) for it to end abruptly due to a power outage, or B) For me to be 4 years old again so I might have a chance to appreciate it.  Ok, so it’s a fairy tale movie and I knew that going into it…but don’t market it as having these massive fight scenes and mythological lions that rip peoples heads off…because all I saw were a bunch of kids leading an army of talking penguins during a 5 minute fight scene in a movie that was 2 hours and 12 minutes long.

So there you have it, my “Birthday”, “Movie Reviews”, “Poker” and “Rant” blog all in one!  Enjoy.

P.S. Did I mention that Narnia SUCKS!?

Pocket WHAT!?

December 5, 2005

Okay so I played poker last night (yes I know what you’re thinking “surprise, surprise”) and I have NEVER seen the shit that was happening last night before.  It was insane!  “What do you mean?” you ask!  Well, let me tell ya…normally when you get dealt pocket jacks (two jacks) three times in a night you would think you have solid hands each and everytime.  WELL, think again!  I should have known, because all three times I had the jacks they were always a spade and a heart, it was like the kiss of death…want to know what I ran into each and everytime I got dealt jacks?  ACES DAMMIT!  POCKET ACES all three times!  It sucked, I lost every-time I got dealt jacks.

Ok, no big deal, I shook it off and tried to continue playing on an even keal…and then it happens, this time I get pocket Aces!   YES, now I get to exact some revenge on these sorry bastards…WRONG!  I lost to two pair!  WTF, I was cursed that night, I lost almost everytime I got dealt pockets!  It hurt!  I even cried a little!

Poker is a harsh game, you’ve got to have thick skin to play that shit.  Anyhow, after all the terrible hands I ran into all night I still managed to win a whole $8.75!  HAHA, but it was fun just to watch the chips fly last night as there was the most insane poker being played I have ever seen!

All-In!
